Success Stories: turning dreams into reality
While best practices help businesses achieve greater goals, they often fulfill a higher purpose: helping people become more successful. Our workforce board members are proud to have helped play even a small role in helping make dreams come true for so many people from North Carolina. These are the best of best practices.
Thanks to the Incumbent Worker Program and the Centralina Workforce Development Board, Deals Glass Service, located in Kannapolis (Cabarrus County), was able to provide valuable skills training for his employees that were not available through the traditional training institutions such as the local community college or university system.
The Incumbent Workforce Development Program serves the interests of both the region’s workers and employers by supporting access to high-quality, market-driven education and skills training. The Incumbent Workforce Development Program provides assistance to employers confronted with the need for new and upgraded worker skills that are necessary to maintain or increase their competitiveness in the global economy. Incumbent workers develop portable skills that benefit their employers, that facilitate transition between jobs, and that enhance their potential for increased earnings.
Deals Glass Service was very satisfied with the outcomes and resulting performance levels of their employees. The Customer Service Representatives have improved their sales closing ratio by 20% and the additional skills gained by the Installers has placed the company in a more competitive position to bid on new contracts with automobile dealers and body shops. Deals Auto Glass is very excited with these results in challenging economic times. The company expects the training to have a positive impact on the customer service experience and result in repeat business. They explained that having a more competent staff would result in more sales and create a more profitable business and that increased sales would allow for higher wages.
They believe that successful companies will expand and that is what this company is poised to do. Their goal is to continue investing in training and ensure that all of their employees have the opportunity to develop their portable skills.
Mr. Willie Clontz has been employed at the company for over nine years. He is currently a Residential and Commercial Manager in the glass installation department. Willie participated in the National Glass Association training. He stated that “the training was very comprehensive, covering dozens of topics.” Mr. Clontz added that “Some of the study material did confirm skills I currently have already but the fact that I have them gave me the confidence that I am following industry standards and installing glass in a safe manner.”
To this date the Centralina Workforce Development Board has helped over 100 businesses in the region with the Incumbent Worker Grant, allowing them to provide training to over 2,500 employees. This is a direct investment in our workforce and our local businesses, as well as our communities.
